Dionysos at Antioch

Detail of Portrait of Dionysos from Daphne (Antioch). Stone tesserae and limestone mortar. 325-330 CE. Rhode Island School of Design (acquired from Worcester).

Over the course of the semester, I have focused my research at the many depictions of Dionysus found in the mosaics from Antioch. Dionysus seems to be a figure who relates to various elements of Antioch as a city – its economy, religion, distance from Rome, and unique culture. The Storymap that I have created showcases many of these mosaics and offers insight into their significance within Antioch and beyond.
